Gurun (峨仑/牛崙) is located in Kuala Muda district and it is about 22 km to the north of  Sungai Petani town. Gurun got its name from the word "gerun", which means terrify or "kurun" the meaning for an elephant in the Siamese dialect.

Several major factories in Gurun industrial zone are namely Perwaja Steel, Modenas and Naza. 

• Perwaja Steel - steel milling operations producing steel bars, wire rods, beams, sections, bolts and nuts, nails and wire meshes. These operations said to relocate to Kemaman plant in Terengganu by Kinsteel Bhd.

• Modenas - the famous Malaysian made motorcycles factory has three main manufacturing and assembly buildings with a total built-up area of about 700,000 Sq.ft.

• Naza - the plant with an area size of 59.2 hectare,KIA Motors licensed fro manufacture and install vehicles under the NAZA and KIA brands. Popular vehicles such as MPV Naza Ria,Citra and Pregio Van among the list produce for domestic market.
